Though Haworthias are low-maintenance succulents, an ideal spot is essential for their thriving. Selecting an ideal place indoors is easy. But it is confusing outdoors because Haworthia has some requirements that match indoor plants.

Haworthia needs a place that receives bright indirect sunlight as the direct sun can burn its leaves. While keeping them outdoors, find a spot with partial shade from other trees and shrubs. Whereas indoors you can keep your haworthia in the bedroom or a few feet away from the window.

Today, we will discuss the ideal spot for Haworthia, the factors determining the right location, and some suitable spots for them in the garden and indoors.

What factors determine the ideal spot for Haworthias?

Many factors require consideration while choosing the right spot for Haworthia.

Most people grow Haworthia as a houseplant due to their demand for low lights, room temperature, and tenderness.

But, by keeping certain factors in mind, you can ideally grow them outdoors.

In this point, we will talk about those factors and their importance.

The direction of the sun

When you think of growing these tender succulents outdoors, you must understand the sun’s direction in your area.

Haworthias enjoy bright indirect sunlight for good growth.

However, the direct sun in the morning up to 11 am is good for their health.

But, when the sun starts getting intense after that, it can burn the leaves if you don’t protect the Haworthias.

You need to understand which direction gives direct sunlight in the morning and reduces intensity during the daytime and afternoon.

You have to experiment with the directions to know which one suits Haworthias.

The same goes for indoor plants. 

Soil

Soil is the next important factor.

If you have gravel beds, you can try planting Haworthia there as they can drain excess water quickly.

However, there can be a problem if you don’t mix ingredients for moisture retention.

They will need frequent watering in the gravel beds.

Haworthia might experience underwatering at some point in such conditions.

Temperature and humidity

You cannot handle the outdoor temperature as that’s natural.

But, if your Haworthia is under the direct sun, it can increase the temperature and harm the plant.

So, before you select a planting site for Haworthias, check the sun’s reach and the temperature in that area.

If it is too high, select any other location.

Or, if you don’t have any other option, you have to check their condition daily.

Another thing you must check while growing Haworthia outside is the temperature in your area during winter.

If the temperature drops below 30°F in the winters, you need to take these tender succulents indoors to protect them from frost.

For indoors, check the surrounding temperature of the particular location and not the room.

If the temperature ranges between 65-75°F, you can keep them there.

Also, check the humidity because there are some humid locations that you must ignore, like the bathroom or aquarium.

Avoid rooms with AC and radiators.

Keep Haworthias in a warm room and away from the windows in the winters.

Please don’t keep them close to radiators or heaters to warm them up.

A moderately warm room will work.

Surrounding conditions outdoors

When you plant Haworthias in an open space, they might get struck by sudden air currents.

This is harmful to their health and will result in brown leaf tips.

The planting site should not be an open area.

There must be some trees at a distance to block the air currents. A low half wall is also good.

The trees can also filter the sunlight.

What are the ideal spots for Haworthia in my garden?

Outdoors, it isn’t easy to declare the right location because it will depend on many factors.

An isolated spot in my garden could be the backyard, but it might be different in your garden.

That is why it isn’t easy to predict the right location for outdoor plants. 

But you will get a rough idea about some ideal locations outdoors in the below-mentioned areas.

A spot with adequate light and tall trees

Let’s explain one by one. First, let’s talk about light.

A place with an adequate amount of light is necessary for Haworthias.

The area should neither be too dim nor too sunny.

The former can make the plant etiolate, whereas the latter can cause sunburn.

Though many people fix shading nets to filter the light, you can select an ideal location that receives indirect light.

Spread your hand when the sunlight reaches your garden.

Do it in every direction and at different times.

It will help you know at which time and directions the sunlight gets intense.

If the heat feels too much and the shadow is sharp, it is direct sunlight.

If the heat feels tolerable and soothing and the shadow seems mild and soft, it is indirect light.

Plant Haworthias at a location that gets indirect sunlight all the time.

Now, let’s talk about the mentioning of tall trees.

Tall trees can help give Haworthias filtered light.

When the sunlight strikes these trees, it will get filtered and scattered and reach the Haworthias.

As a result, they are not getting the direct sun but a filtered one.

Tall trees can also protect the Haworthias from air currents.

Haworthias naturally grow under the shrubs and grasses in their native land, so they cannot stay in an open space.

The presence of some trees can block the air currents and protect them.

A parapet wall would also help.

The wall can also give Haworthias partial shade.

Away from rooftops and fountains

A garden bed near these two places will keep the soil saturated most of the time due to the continuous water dripping.

Sometimes the water drops can also fall over the foliage and increase the humidity.

Haworthias can store water in their leaves and are sensitive to too much moisture.

Constant dripping or splashing of water keeps the soil and the plant moist all the time.

Even if they get adequate light, it wouldn’t be enough to dry out the soil. 

Such a condition can rot these succulents. So, avoid such kinds of areas. 

A zone where pets and children won’t loiter

It is another essential factor that many of us neglect.

While choosing the right spot, all we think about is light, temperature, and soil condition.

You may ignore this point if you don’t have any pets or children to wander and play around your garden.

You must choose a location where the pets don’t go.

Animals are curious, and out of that, they will try to taste your plant and destroy them in the process.

Children love to play.

So, they may harm them while playing around.

If you want Haworthias to be safe from them, choose an isolated area where they won’t go.

It can differ depending on various houses.

It could be the backyard, or it could be any corner in your garden.

Temperature

Temperature determines whether outdoors is a suitable place for Haworthia or indoors.

Furthermore, it also depends on the region where you stay.

Before you place Haworthias outdoors, it is very important to know the temperature range of your region in the summers and winters.

They enjoy a temperature ranging between 65-75°F.

In the summers, the maximum range is between 80-90°F.

Once the temperature crosses 90°F at night, Haworthias will start going dormant.

If your region gets temperature below 30°F and snowfall in the winters, outdoor is not the best place for Haworthia.

Indoors would be a suitable place for their stay.

Spacing

When you choose a location for Haworthias, make sure they get enough space to grow and receive adequate airflow.

Though Haworthias don’t spread much, they still need space for their offsets.

So, you need to choose a space big enough for them to let them grow properly without any overcrowding.

With enough space, you can also plant other kinds of plants along with Haworthia.

As I mentioned in the previous point, a good space can also help you make raised beds.

Soil

Soil with a pH level of 6.6 to 7.5 is an ideal spot for Haworthias.

Along with that, you also need to check whether the soil of your chosen spot is clayey or sandy.

The soil of that spot should not be too clayey, compact, or sandy.

Check for a location where you can easily tilt the soil to add some gritty materials and even aerate the soil.

Some ideal locations for indoor Haworthias

Indoors, there are lots of options where you can put these succulents.

Near a sunny window but a few feet back

Haworthias can neither tolerate direct sun nor dark areas.

So, select a sunny window and place your plant a few feet back.

By this, they will get adequate sunlight but not direct. 

If it is an east-facing window, you can keep Haworthias near it without curtains or protection.

This direction will give your plant indirect sun and even fade off once the day progresses.

But if it is a south or west-facing window, you have to put on sheer curtains to filter the direct sun.

In the bedroom, study room, or drawing room

Some succulents can help manage stress.

They introduce some amount of oxygen to the air and our body.

This oxygen can further help us to calm down our minds and maintain a relaxed emotional state in our minds.

It also improves our breathing.

This extra clean oxygen also helps increase our serotonin levels, which helps balance our mood and make us happy.

Haworthias can do this treatment of the mind and body.

As bedrooms, drawing rooms, and study rooms are places where we spend most of our time, placing Haworthias in any of these rooms will benefit us.

Avoid bathrooms, kitchens, fireplaces, or aquariums as they are humid and can rot.

Away from pets and children

It is better to place Haworthias somewhere high where the pets and children cannot reach.

As they are curious beings, they will try to perform all sorts of experiments and hurt or kill the plants.

It will also ensure you or anyone doesn’t accidentally bump onto them and hurt them.

A room with adequate temperature

As I mentioned earlier, the outside temperature is not in our hands.

Wherever you place them, the temperature would be the same as your region.

But, indoors, the temperature may differ depending on the surrounding locations.

For example, if you have kept these succulents in a cool room, the temperature would be very low.

If you place them near a heated room, the temperature will be high.

So, measure the temperature of the area you selected for Haworthias to stay to give them the right temperature.

It should be within 65-75°F. It can go up to 80°F but should not cross more than that.

Avoid rooms with air conditioners, radiators, or heaters.

These places have extreme temperatures and can hurt your Haworthia.

Where to put Haworthia? – A brief summary

A place with indirect sunlight is ideal for them. Along with that, some tall trees or parapet walls would be better to block the air currents.	A sunny window is good. A south or west-facing window with sheer curtains and an east-facing window without curtains are best for Haworthias.
A spot with an ideal soil quality with a suitable pH level is good for them. The soil should not be compact as you can dig the place, add ingredients and improve aeration.	Keep the plant a few feet back. It will prevent the plant from getting the direct sun, strong winds, and temperature fluctuations.
If your region gets snowfall, then outdoors is not the best place for Haworthias. Grow them indoors instead. Or, you can take them inside if they are growing in pots.	Ensure that the temperature of the particular location is average and room temperature, i.e., within 65 and 75°F.
A spot with enough space will let you plant many other plants at a proper distance, and it will also help in good airflow.	Avoid fireplaces, kitchen, bathroom, and aquarium, rooms with air conditioners, heaters, and radiators. These are the most humid and extreme temperature zones.
A zone where pets or children don’t roam is good for Haworthias, and it will save them from destruction.	Keep it out of the children’s and pets’ reach so that they don’t hurt them.
Choose a site away from fountains and rooftops. It would keep the soil bed and the plant from getting moist and rotting.	You can place them in your bedroom, study room, or drawing room due to their ability to balance our mind and body, calm down our emotions and improve our breathing.

Along with the right placement, you must also take care of the right watering, fertilization, re-potting, and winter care. Locating them at the right place will keep Haworthias healthy and make them thrive under their suitable environmental conditions.
