Why Are My Daisies Drooping? (Causes+How To Fix)

Daisies are low-maintenance, sturdy plants with beautiful blooms. However, the aesthetics of the plant is completely destroyed when leaves and flowers droop. In this article, let’s find out why the leaves of your daisy plant are drooping and how we can fix them.

Both overwatering and underwatering can be the primary cause of droopy daisies. When overwatered, they will suffer root rot which can cause their leaves to droop. And when underwatered, daisies tend to lose all their moisture, and the leaves eventually droop as the plant uses up all the water.

Other reasons for droopy leaves in daisies can be inappropriate sunlight, over-fertilization, and pest infestation.

The daisies remain dormant in the winters and bloom during the spring season. So, if care is not taken during the dormancy period, the leaves of the plant can curl and droop.

Therefore, it becomes crucial to understand why your plant’s leaves are drooping to fix the issue and save your plants.

Why the leaves on my daisy plant are droopy?

The daisies start drooping due to various reasons, which are as follows:

  1. Inadequate watering
  2. Improper sunlight
  3. Extreme temperature
  4. Poor drainage system
  5. Overfertilization
  6. Pests and bugs

Let us understand all these causes one by one.

Inadequate watering

Inadequate watering is one of the primary causes of droopy leaves in your daisies.

Overwatering and underwatering are both dangerous for your daisies. If you are watering your daisies too often, thinking that it will thrive with the help of more water, then you need to rethink because they don’t like sitting on the water.

Overwatering can be lethal for your plants because most of the time, the damage done to the roots due to root rot is irreversible.

Therefore, you should instead provide less water to your plant than overwatering it. Your daisy plant can survive the deficiency of water for quite a few days, and even if it droops due to lack of water, it is easier to revive it.

But due to overwatering, the roots get infected and are not capable enough to supply nutrients to the plant. This is why the plant does not receive enough water, oxygen, and other nutrients to carry on its normal Synthesis of food. Hence the leaves droop.

The symptoms of overwatering and underwatering are alike. So you will need to examine appropriately to find out what exactly is the reason.

Insert your finger into the soil to find out whether it is moist or dry and figure out the reason.

If you find the soil wet and moist, then overwatering is the cause of the droopy leaves. But in contrast to this, if the soil is dusty, flaky, and dry for the plants liking, then underwatering is the reason.

Solution

With the below steps, you can save the plant from root rot:

  • Remove the damaged part of the plant.
  • Replant it in a spot where the soil is well-draining.
  • The plant should be in a place where it can receive direct sunlight.
  • If you see the plant recovering and becoming completely dry, water it carefully.

Reviving your plant from underwatering is relatively easier. You will need to water your plant slowly, and you will see it regain its normal luster in one or two days. But remember not to overwater it.

Improper sunlight

Daisy 6

Daisy plant loves bright sunlight, and if it does not receive enough sunlight for some reason, then the leaves of the plant can wilt and droop.

Lack of sunlight can cause stunted growth in your daisies, and the plant will also become weak as it will not be able to perform proper photosynthesis.

Hence, the plant and the leaves lack energy, and they don’t have enough strength to hold their lives in a normal state, which results in the curling and drooping of the leaves.

Too much exposure to the sun is also not good for your daisies if the temperature is too hot. In this case, the plant will lose moisture due to transpiration, and the leaves will droop.

Therefore, we can understand that sunlight plays a vital role in keeping your daisies healthy and beautiful. Hence the plant requires an adequate amount of the sun to thrive and have beautiful blooms.

Solution

The daisies will require to stay in bright sunlight for at least six hours to thrive and bloom wonderfully along with a proper supply of moisture.

They don’t like staying in the shade as they are sun-loving. So, make sure that you have planted your daisies in a spot where it is receiving full sun throughout the day.

When the sunlight is too harsh on your daisies during the hot summer days, you can provide them with temporary shade to avoid sunburn. You will also need to water them at least once in 5 to 7 days during this time.

Extreme temperature

Daisies like a cool climate with bright sunshine, and they thrive well between 70-75°F temperature. They can tolerate low temperatures up to 30°F, but it isn’t easy for them to survive in frosty conditions.

The daisies prefer excellent conditions, and if the temperature rises above 75°F under the bright sun, it might cause sunburn. The daisies can wilt and droop in such situations.

If extreme heat is causing the leaves of your Daisy plant to droop, then it is time to provide them some temporary shade.

Solution

As the daisies cannot tolerate extreme heat, you will need to keep them hydrated in hot conditions And provide some temporary shade.

Don’t overwater it during winters because it retains moisture during the winters. The daisies love to sunbathe during cold winters retaining their moisture.

Frosty conditions are not suitable for them. So, protect them from frost and extreme cold and prepare a greenhouse to maintain at least 40°F temperature during severely cold weather.

Poor drainage system

If the drainage is not good, the daisies will not thrive and suffer in the long run, and the leaves will droop. The plant’s stem will also remain soggy due to poor drainage and extra moisture stored in the soil and roots.

Excess moisture will also invite diseases like fungal disease and will cause root rot. This will result in a weak plant and droopy leaves.

If the drainage is poor, it means that you are creating overwatering conditions for your Daisy plant without realizing the fact. Therefore, you will need soil with 70 to 80% of sand content to make it well-draining, which will help your plant grow and thrive.

Solution

Before planting your daisies, make sure to prepare the soil where you want to grow your daisies. You will need to prepare the soil using a mix of organic matter with sand, peat moss, and manure compost.

Sandy soil will be great for your daisies as it will drain an excessive amount of water and will hold only the moisture that the plant requires.

Overfertilization

If you are overfeeding your plant with fertilizer to boost the growth of your disease, then you are unknowingly harming your plant.

Daisies don’t require fertilizer very often. However, you can feed them once a month if you use liquid fertilizer, which drains quickly.

But if you are using granular fertilizer, which is heavier and remains in the soil for a long time for the plants to feed on them, then make sure that you fertilize them once every six months and before the blooming season.

Do not get carried away while fertilizing your plant, and don’t end up using too much of it as it can increase the soil’s acidity, harming the roots.

Overfertilization will lead to salt buildup in the soil, eliminating good microbes and bacteria from the soil.

And ultimately, it can burn up the leaves and hinders the supply of nutrients, which will cause droopy leaves for your plant.

Therefore, overfeeding your daisies can prove fatal for the plant, causing root rot, fungal growth, droopy leaves, and many more problems, so please try to avoid Overfertilization.

Solution

To keep your daisies healthy, you will have to supply them with a sufficient dose of fertilizer. So, you will need to focus more on quality rather than quantity.

Daisies can thrive fast in favorable conditions. Once you have planted your daisies and they have started growing and spreading their roots in the soil, it is time to provide some fertilizer after 15 to 30 days of planting.

If you use light liquid all-purpose fertilizer, then fertilize it once in a month or two months. If you want to use granular fertilizer, use it once every six months as it stays in the soil for a longer period.

Daisies stay under the sun all day long, and due to this, it becomes difficult for the pests to attack the plant. It can only happen under unfavorable conditions where the weather is too humid and moist, and the plant is deprived of sunlight.

Pests like whiteflies, mealybugs, spider mites, and thrips can invade your daisies in unfavorable conditions. These pests can take away all the nutrients from your plant, making them weak, and they will show up in the form of droopy leaves.
